About Seed&Sprout

Seed&Sprout began in 2016, when its founder went looking for a plastic-free lunchbox for her son and could not find one that worked. So she made one. The first product run was funded on Kickstarter and fully backed within 48 hours, which turned out to be a fair indication of how many others had been looking for the same thing.

Ten years on, the business makes plastic-free household products across lunchware, kitchen, food storage, cleaning, personal care, travel and outdoors, shipping to customers in around 50 markets.

The past few years have been busy. Revenue roughly tripled last financial year, and the business is approaching the point where it is classified as a large proprietary company, with the reporting and audit obligations that step up alongside it.

About the role

This is Seed&Sprout's first CFO. Finance currently sits with the CEO, supported by two long-standing outsourced partners.

The CFO would own the end-to-end financial operations and build the function from the ground up. That means hiring the team, shaping how it works, and deciding how much of it sits offshore through the existing Philippines entity. Automation and AI have not yet made their way into finance here, so there is real scope to build it the way it should be built.

Three things sit at the heart of the role.

Building the function. Bringing finance in-house, creating management reporting, budgeting and forecasting the business can act on, and getting it ready for the reporting and audit regime that arrives with the $50 million threshold. On the current trajectory, that is closer than most people would guess.

Looking after the money. Cash flow, working capital, and the funding facilities would be moved across from the CEO. Product is by far the biggest draw on cash, and order to delivery runs around five months, so this part of the role carries more weight than it might elsewhere.

Building for international. New Zealand scales this financial year, with the UK and the US to follow. Much of the groundwork is still ahead, from entities and tax structures through to banking and fulfilment. Seed&Sprout has decided it wants to own the modelling of duties, landed cost, foreign exchange and multi-entity reporting itself rather than hand it to someone else, and that build would belong to the CFO.

Alongside all of it, the role works closely with the rest of the leadership team as wholesale grows and new markets open, and puts in place the delegations, budgets and governance frameworks the business has not needed until now.

About you

You have been a CFO, or held the equivalent seat, in a consumer business where eCommerce and DTC are a meaningful revenue contributor. You have built a finance function before, including hiring the team, and you have been through a period of fast growth and the compliance step-ups that come with it. Multi-currency, multi-entity, international tax and landed cost are familiar ground.

This one suits someone who likes being close to the details. There is no board, no finance team on day one and nobody above you on the numbers. You would be building from a blank page and becoming the person the business turns to on anything financial, which is either the appeal or the reason to pass. Must be CA or CPA qualified.

The practical detail

Remote-first, open to candidates anywhere in Australia, with regular travel to the Northern Rivers. The target is an October start. The process is face-to-face, and the CEO will travel to meet candidates.
